Memorial Day

While celebrating Memorial Day with beer, boats, and BBQ I hope everyone also takes a moment to remember those who fought & died (or are fighting) so that others wouldn't have to. Thank you.

This week is my last week precepting on one section of my unit, and surprisingly I'm kind of sad to leave it. It was full, and I mean FULL, of frustrations and a few tears thrown in- but in the end I feel like I learned a lot and am just starting. I will have the opportunity at the end of 6 months to choose which part of the unit I want to stay in (SSU, PACU, Pre-Op, or Peds PACU), it's just a shame that I'm already done with my time in the most challenging one! Next month my work shift will be 3 days a week from 0530-1800, and while I like the idea of being done with work at 6pm, I don't quite know how I feel about having to be there by 530 in the morning; since I'm still commuting that means getting out of bed around 345am 3 days a week. Holy. Hell. And I'm not a morning person. Who knows though, maybe I will fall in love with it.

Only 8 more days until I take part in NaBloPoMo so apologies if my posts remain few and far between until then.

Corn & Black bean salad

A friend of my parents passed this recipe on to them, and since I've been making it a lot this spring I wanted to share the recipe. Everyone who tries it seems to really like it, so hopefully someone out there will enjoy it also.
  • 2 cans black beans drained and rinsed
  • 1 large bag of frozen corn kernels (thawed)
  • 1 large can chopped tomatoes
  • 1 finely chopped sweet onion
  • Several large squirts of lime juice (to taste)
  • Finely chopped fresh cilantro or basil (to taste)
  • ~1/3 c. olive oil
  • 3 boneless chicken breasts cooked and chopped
Mix it all together in a large bowl and let sit in the refrigerator for a few hours to "marinate". Enjoy.

Starting in June I will be taking part in NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month) which is a take-off of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). The idea is to write a blog post every day for a month (obviously). Unlike the novel one, this one is year round; unfortunately I didn't find out about it until recently so I have to wait until June to start. Luckily, the website offers prompts each day, which will help someone like me who can't find anything to write about 90% of the time. I know I tend to fall short on keeping this thing updated, so hopefully June will satisfy my "anonymous" readers who claim I never have anything to say. :-)

New Nephew/Godson

This post is a little late (b/c I'm a slacker) but my baby sister had her first baby boy on April 27th. He is one of the only babies I've ever known to look completely normal after being born vaginally (sorry, but it's true- they tend to be coneheads) and to me, looks a lot like his dad. That's good though, b/c if he looked like his mom I'd wonder if they knew the actual sex of their child. Anyways- my sister has a blog devoted to him but I stole a few photos to share below. Welcome to the world Laird Joseph...I'll have you wakeboarding/kayaking/horseback riding/skiing in no time!

May 9

Today is Mother's Day, and I have to admit that I have been BLESSED beyond belief to have such a wonderful woman as my mom. Not only she is intelligent, independent, and beautiful but she's also incredibly patient, supportive, tolerant, and the complete opposite of overbearing. I'm thankful to have a mom (and dad) who just want me to be happy regardless of what that means for my life. So Happy Mother's Day to my mom- I love you unconditionally- and also to my baby sister who is now a mom herself!
